I am a freelance journalist who specialises in international news, current affairs and analysis. I report, write, photograph, film and point microphones at people. I love to write and I’m streetwise and keep my ear to the ground…
I am also a media trainer with experience working in conflict zones. I run workshops and courses in news gathering and technical skills for broadcast, studio and on-the-ground reporting; security; social media – all with an emphasis on integrity and ethics.
I have a professional postgraduate qualification in journalism and I am ex-BBC World Service. I have intensive newsroom experience as well as field reporting.
Prior to that I was a graduate anthropologist at the School of Oriental & African Studies with extensive fieldwork experience (and an unfinished PhD). This still influences my work in journalism and when funding permits I try to spend longer periods on the ground and research in depth. I work with cameras but I also love radio.
I write for Al Jazeera, Quartz, Think Africa, New African Magazine, Yahoo News, The East African, amongst others. I have been interviewed on a variety of radio/TV channels including BBC R4, RFI and stations in South Africa and America. I have high-level consultancy experience.
I am licensed to drive motorbikes, cars and trucks up to 3.5 tons and I dance Flamenco.
